The Hans van Leeuwen Diving helmet miniatures

Myself I started my helmet diving career in 1984 when I bought several lots of Siebe Gorman diving equipments at a Ministry of Defense Surplus sale here in Holland. But even before I had bought the equipments, when I was still serving with the Army Engineers myself, I had been thinking about traveling and doing diving jobs down the road as soon as my draft of 14 months would have ended. After I had bought the lots from the military this dream came true. I started a business which provided the possibility for sports divers to dive a genuine vintage hard hat diving equipment, more or less for fun and as a special experience. From 1984 to 1987 I dived ‘all over Holland’ with my gear, in spring 1987 I bought an old Ford van and drove down south to France with it and dived for 1 year with the diving clubs of Cerbere, Banyuls, Collioure and Argeles sur mer.

But before all that, in 1984 Hans van Leeuwen was my very first customer when we dived in the lake of Oostvoorne, south of Rotterdam. Hans was a professional gold and silver smith and we were both member of the same diving club in Amsterdam where we had learned SCUBA diving. His dive in the ex dutch army Siebe Gorman equipment made such a great impression that he decided to rebuild the helmet he dived as a scale model in Silver. The helmet he made was only 6 or 7 cm’s high but the window could be screwed off, the nuts came off as did the brailes, etc. He had made a true gem. The feed back he got when he showed his art at the diving club was great and Hans decided to make a series of these silver Siebe Gorman helmets. Several were sold, the remaining stock was bought by a dealer here in Holland. For some reason this dealer had one of the helmets put on a piece of stone to serve as an ‘award’. This ‘award’ he soon after started handing out to all kinds of diving related institutes. The question if any commercial dealer is to hand out an award to people is a one matter, but without loosing more time explaining why (*) I can see absolutely no legitimation for exactly this dealer to be handing out any award ...

(* see ‘Fake Helmet Alert’ chapter )

After this first project with the silver Siebe Gorman helmets Hans van Leeuwen kept being excited about diving helmets and he continued building scale models of them. His scale models are quite valuable not only because of their amazing craftsmanship but also since they are made of either bronze or pure Silver(!) Some of these scale models are available for sale, in case of interest please send me an email through the link at the bottom of this page and I will put you in direct contact with Hans van Leeuwen.

Maurizio explains about his miniatures: My 2.75:1 scale reproductions are complete in every detail, even the little ones and their mechanics is fully functional, are made of copper, brass, bronze, glass and leather. Each helmet is unique and is made completely by hand. I built my models according to the design specifications of the time when I found the original drawings and copying historical helmets that I had in my lab. Each piece has the serial number Masuccisub in the same place as the original, it can be finished shiny and with time grow old, transparent polished painted and will always remain bright or aged with a veneer of many years. It is fully supportive of painted wood and has a certificate of origin with the data of the owner, month and year of manufacture and the type of finish. The certificate has my original signature.      Maurizio Masucci
